Infernos Big Mountain Meal Review

It’s an all you can eat, all you can drink, fancy dress party!

featured in Nightlife reviews Author Ally MacLeod, Avoriaz Reporter Updated

Every Wednesday mountain revellers make their way over to the Plateau de Nyon in Morzine ski area for one of with wildest après parties in the Portes Du Soleil – The Big Mountain Meal at Inferno.

Inferno is a mountain lodge, bar and après terrace up on the Plateau de Nyon, offering unique and lively mountain experience up and away from Morzine town. The lodge provides cheap and cheerful accommodation with ski in ski out location right next to the pistes, ideal for skiers and boarders keen to get a lot of mountain-time in on a budget. The refurbishment for this winter saw new bedrooms for the lodge and a hot tub installed on the terrace – along with big après plans, Infernos has become one of the only places to be on a Wednesday afternoon.

The Big Mountain Meal happens every Wednesday, and is an original and wild après party popular among seasonnaires of Morzine. For €25 (paid when you arrive), you can enjoy an all you can eat buffet, as well as unlimited beer, wine and bowls of suspiciously alcoholic concoctions from 16.00 until 20.00 at night after the sun has long gone down.

If you’re on holiday, and especially if your planning an après at Infernos in your holiday itinerary, it is generally suggested you bring at least one fancy dress outfit for your trip. Morzine is awash with stags, hens and groups of friends in fancy dress every week of the season – we’ve seen a skiing Elmo, a snowboarding Superman and a team teenage mutant ninja turtles this year already! If you’re unsure what outfit to go for, why not book yourself a little bit of the 80’s and rent a loud and proud retro onesie from Retro Rentals for your trip. Working in association with the Big Mountain Meal every Wednesday at Infernos, the epic 80s skiwear company allows you to choose your very own brightly coloured one piece to rent for the day, or as long as you want to rock it out on the slopes for a budget-friendly price. Simple!

There are a few ways to make your way to and from Infernos, but we’d always say the best and obvious way to ski/snowboard there and back. If you’re not confident skier or boarder, I’d suggest getting the Nyon Téléphérique up before 17.00 which drops you at Infernos on the mountain, and that way you can enjoy the luxury of a skidoo ride down in the dark when the party is over rather than tackling the ski down.

The party kicks off around late afternoon, but if the sun’s out the terrace with the hot tub and deck chairs can often tempt people there earlier. The music starts from 15.00, and each week Infernos puts on a new line up of DJs or live bands, which can vary from anything to live funk and reggae après bands to heavy drum ‘n’ bass later on in the evening.

The buffet food on offer definitely ticks the right boxes after a long day skiing and boarding – past Wednesday’s have seen plates piled high with unlimited servings Beef Bourguignon, Tartiflette, and Spaghetti Bolognese with side helpings of salad and garlic bread. Towers of beer, jugs of wine and bowls of spirits and mixer are laid out on the tables for everyone to help themselves, and are re-filled throughout the evening making sure you get your money’s worth.

It wouldn’t be a good party unless a lot of dancing was involved, and once the food is cleared away everyone gets on the tables for the rest of the night! Fire breathing girls and guys step up to the stage to provide spectacular entertainment for the evening, and the DJ turns the music up loud without worrying about disturbing anyone for miles around!

At the end of the evening, a Skidoo with lights will make sure you don’t ski off into the darkness by guiding you down the slopes to Nyon carpark, which is only a 10-minute walk away from Morzine town. Skiing down the mountain in the dark is a fantastic novelty experience, but it is important to be safe and make sure everyone in your group makes it home safely, and that nobody sets off on their own.

Whether you’re here for the week or the season, you won’t want to miss out on the Big Mountain Meal at Inferno, the wildest après party every Wednesday.
