Good skiing if you stay high in the Portes du Soleil

80cm fresh snow in Avoriaz this week

featured in Snow report Author Giles Towler, Avoriaz Reporter Updated

It might be raining in Morzine today but there is a lot of snow falling higher up in Avoriaz.

High winds kept most of the lifts closed on Tuesday and the snow started Tuesday night, with heavy snow falling throughout the Portes du Soleil ski area.

In Avoriaz approximately eighty centimetres of snow has fallen in the past seventy two hours, with thirty centimetres falling in the last day and yet more falling today. Take a look at our Dump Alerts for more information.

Things are not looking quite so good in Morzine itself though. Most of the precipitation has come in the form of rain instead of snow, with the freezing level only slightly higher than town. Despite this, snow was falling heavily throughout late afternoon yesterday at Ardent, meaning that only the lower slopes of Pleney will have been adversely affected by the rain.

The wind has subsided and most pistes are now open. Only the higher, more exposed areas of Mossettes and Fornet are still closed (this means that it’s not currently possible to get over to Switzerland by either of these routes). Check in on the Live Lift Status to see which lifts and pistes are open throughout the day.

After the busy weeks of February the snow had suffered quite a bit, with the pistes becoming chopped up and bare patches appearing on some of the lower slopes. This new snowfall will have improved things significantly.

Off-piste conditions are generally good, the avalanche risk is currently at three meaning that the snowpack is considerably likely to slide, so be careful out there. With the storm continuing the visibility is not ideal, however, so it is a good idea to stay in the trees (although with the higher slopes being closed this is primarily where people will be skiing anyway).

Work has continued on the snowparks with improvements being made whenever possible, and the half pipe is being built up. There is now enough snow for most of the features in The Stash to be open.

If the snow continues, as it is forecast to, the Portes Du Soleil could be on course for a great March. With the February holidays finally over, now is the perfect time to visit for great snow and quiet slopes.
