La Pointe de Nyon restaurant review

Amazing burgers with an incredible view: head to the Nyon bowl!

featured in Restaurant reviews Author Alice Gregr, Avoriaz Reporter Updated

The Nyon bowl is a great place to head to for amazing food, great views and a lively après ski scene.

It’s home to both La Pointe de Nyon restaurant, Inferno hotel and a number of other cafés and restaurants, which are equally full of character. The bowl links the resorts of Les Gets and Morzine and is a great place to stop for a drink after a busy day on the slopes or a much needed lunch time fill. The Pointe de Nyon restaurant is in the most prominent position in the bowl with incredible views up towards the peak of the mountain. We heard its burgers were amazing so felt we had to give it a try!

The restaurant is a lunch venue and is therefore extremely popular. Between 12pm and 2pm throughout the season it’s always busy and you may have to wait for a table. However, it has deckchairs out on its terrace, which are often free, which means you can always sit and wait with a beer in your hand! We timed our lunch towards the end of service at around 2.30pm and this meant we got a table with a prime spot under the heated terrace, overlooking the mountain. It was a special occasion for us as we were celebrating a birthday and it really fit the bill.

The waiters and waitresses are really efficient and quick to serve you – they’re also helpful and happy to bring drinks out to you at the deckchairs, which is great as navigating the stairs in ski boots is a little tricky. The menu is full of Savoyard specialities, crossed with your standard burgers, salads and omelettes. We’d already been advised that the 'double Savoyard burger' is amazing there so it didn’t take us long to pick what we were having to eat.

Our order consisted of a couple of veggie salads, a couple of single Savoyard burgers, a cheese burger and a plain omelette and chips. We thought it would take a while for the food to be prepared as it was quite a large order but it was with us surprisingly quickly, much to the relief of the hungry group.

The vegetarian salad was something quite unique to this area of France; it had a poached egg on the top, with amazing garlic croutons, potatoes and loads of tomatoes, cucumbers and leaves. I find that there’s usually very little choice for veggies out here and the choices are usually brimming with cheese, so this was a really nice treat. It was really tasty and filling and the croutons were delicious. It was a bit naughty (and nice) but I was pleasantly surprised by all the extras that came with it.

The boys, although tempted by the double Savoyard burger, decided on this occasion to go for the slightly smaller version and went for the single one instead but it was still massive! Their eyes widened when it was brought to the table because it certainly looked impressive. It was huge and consisted of a bun and a burger loaded with bacon, cheese, salad and a plateful of chips. Neither finished their portion but said it was absolutely delicious, they did however question who would be able to successfully manage the bigger version of their meal.

The vegetarian omelette also turned out to be a great success. It, like the rest of the dishes, was pretty filling and large but was really tasty. It was served with chips and salad and I’m told the eggs were cooked to perfection. Still a little runny but just right.

By the time we’d all finished our meals (and the several drinks we’d ordered.) we were feeling pretty full. And after a day of skiing around the Nyon bowl we were also feeling pretty sleepy. However, that didn’t last long. The thing with eating in the mountains is that you have to make your way down somehow. We paid up – it turned out to cost around 20€ per person- and headed home.

As we were leaving at around 4 o’clock the restaurant was closing up so it’s really only a place to go to for lunch and a few early afternoon drinks. The run home is fairly steep in places but is wide and often pretty quiet, so it’s a great end of the day jaunt. It also helps to get rid of the full feeling. You can always chicken out and get the telecabine down if you just don’t fancy boarding or skiing again.

If you’re feeling like having a drink after your meal, you can always go to Inferno bar which is just a short walk from La Pointe de Nyon for some après drinks. They always have great parties going on and plenty of live music. You can then ski down at last light, which is always exciting.

La Pointe de Nyon is a great place to visit if you’re looking for an early feed with a great atmosphere and lovely views. The food is tasty and filling and pretty good value. We’ll definitely be going back, but this time the boys might be brave enough to try the double Savoyard burger...
