Most people come on a winter holiday in the mountains for the skiing. It’s just an added bonus that there is usually a lively après-ski scene, making it entirely acceptable to get the party started at 16:00.

There are only certain places on planet earth that provide the right atmosphere and environment for a true après ski. This winter, Avoriaz became one of those places.

La Folie Douce

In previous years Avoriaz seems to have lacked having ‘that place’ where people go to get loose after a long day on the slopes, but after the arrival of famous bar and restaurant chain La Folie Douce, things have changed. If you’re a fan of ski holidays, and an even bigger fan of drinking on ski holidays, you’ll probably have heard of La Folie Douce, which already has prime party spots in Val D’Isere, Meribel, Val Thorens, Alpe D’huez and Chamonix. Now the bar is sitting pretty right on the Avoriaz Plateau awaiting your arrival. Undoubtedly you’ll hear the bar before you see it, with crowds of happy holiday makers spilling out onto the terrace.

Everyday house and electronic music will be playing from the DJ booth overlooking the crowd, where singers and dancers will keep you entertained and dancing until early evening. La Folie Douce is perfect for those staying in Avoriaz and for those residing down the valley in Morzine. The accessibility of the bar means that you can reach the nearby hotels and apartments and also ski down to the Prodains bubble lift, which will transport you back to the buses. The après here is from 14:00 to 18:00, so you have plenty of time to reach the last bus back to Morzine which leaves Prodains at 20:55. If you carry on the après beyond 18:00, be aware that taxis in Morzine can sometimes be hard to come by, and it’ll be a long walk home if you miss the last bus.

Village Igloo

Another great option for those needing to stay close to the Prodains home-run is the Igloo Bar, located just above the entrance to the lift station. The Igloo is fantastic for those wanting a truly unique experience, as you can drink at their ice bar whilst admiring the breath-taking sculptures carved into the walls. Alternatively, they have a sunny terrace for you to relax on with views across Avoriaz, and down the valley towards Morzine. Every Friday the Igloo Village host a DJ who plays from 14:00 to 17:00, meaning you can get straight from piste to party.

Happy Hours

For staff working in Morzine, nowhere beats the après that Happy Hours bring every Wednesday. Located at the bottom of the Ardent bubble, Happy Hours has been the go-to for seasonnaires for many years now, and even the arrival of La Folie won’t bruise their reputation. With a crowd of regulars there, the parties have an atmosphere like no other bar in resort. Every Sunday until the end of the winter will be the Sunday Boogie, where a local DJ Ronan Gravier will play disco, classic house, deep and tech house. Tuesdays belong to Audible One, British beatboxer and DJ, whilst Wednesdays see Mr Fitz and co. bringing you everything from hip-hop to drum and bass to your classic party favourites. Fridays throughout the season are strictly upbeat disco, funk and jazz with Ben GC, who aims to get at least one of you dancing on tables.

Food whilst you grove

For those of you wanting more than a liquid lunch, check out La Terrasse located in the Goat Village just down from the Lindarets Bowl. I can’t and won’t stop raving about the cheese fondue here, as I truly believe it’s the best around, but along with great grub, they have a superb atmosphere mid-afternoon when groups have finished their day of skiing and are rehydrating with one or two glasses of wine. Good food, music and location make a successful après, and another restaurant to look up is La Tavaillon in the heart of Avoriaz. This unassuming bar wedged between Les Fontaines Blanches and the boulangerie is another favourite amongst seasonnaires, serving delicious burgers and cold beers from 09:00 to 02:00.

Late nights

We know how easy it is to get carried away; one beer turns into two, two turns into six, and before you know it you’ve entered the wee hours of the morning. So where will you find yourself late at night in Avoriaz? As well La Tavallion, Shooters and Café le Fantastique are open until 02:00. Shooters, named because they have over 50 different shots for you to choose from, put on live music twice daily; once for après ski, and again at around 22:00. Around midnight their resident DJ’s will step up to the decks and get you grooving until the bar closes at 02:00. Café le Fantastique is the place to be if you’re a lover of cocktails. Their menu contains classics such as mojitos, cosmopolitans, sex on the beach and margaritas, to name a few. They also have a wide selection of bottled beers, and an extensive wine menu.

Le Yak

If you’re still standing when the bar closes at 02:00, head over to Le Yak, the only place in town that stays open until 05:00. The club has mixed reviews on TripAdvisor, but if you’re looking for somewhere to dance until (almost) sunrise, this is the place.
