Local Area

The town of Avoriaz (the brainchild of Olympic downhill champion Jean Vuarnet) sits high on a plateau at the end of a wide valley. Sprouting upwards from the top of the cliff face the contemporary, space age-like apartment blocks are clad with wood and mimic the look of the rock below, blending in surreptitiously with their surroundings. Close up however, the bold structures loom above the snowy streets where only skiers, sleighs and pedestrians pass by. The centre of the town buzzes with fresh faces from mountain exploits grabbing lunch at a bakery or a beer at one of the outdoor bars.

Avoriaz can be accessed by car or by gondola from the town of Morzine (about 15 minutes away). Geneva is the nearest airport and once in Avoriaz itself you will swap wheels for hooves and board horse drawn sleighs to take you to your accommodation.

For a more sophisticated evening, head to one of the many restaurants for a good selection of meat, fish and fine french cooking.
