Public transport in Avoriaz is very good and definitely of a more novel variety than your average ski resort! As a car free resort, the only traffic you will see are horse drawn sleighs and shuttles, thus preserving the environment and ensuring your well-being. This means that you are not able to drive to your accommodation or around town but all apartments are ski-in/ski-out and the resort amenities are right on your doorstep. However, the transport options at your disposal are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
On arrival in Avoriaz, there are baggage sleds available at the entrance points to the resort as well as at the base of each residence to help you manoeuvre your luggage to and from your apartment. They work like supermarket trolleys and require a €1 coin to release one which you get back when you return it to one of the tying up points. There are plenty to go round so don’t hog them and keep them in your apartment!
Horse drawn sleighs are also available from 8am to 7pm, 7 days a week. With 28 sleighs and around 100 horses they are a common sight on the streets and one of the highlights of visiting Avoriaz. Journey prices range from €5 - €13 depending on how far you want to go and luggage is charged at €2 per bag. You can pick one up at the entrance of the resort (“Accueil”), the outdoor parking P2, the top station of the Prodains cable car and in the centre of town. They also offer various scenic trips around the resort for €15 - €35.
You will also see a fleet of shuttles zipping around the resort which look a little like minibuses on caterpillar tracks. They operate 7 days a week from 7pm to 8am and during the winter cost €8 per family. Throughout the summer season they are €7 per family, or free on presentation of a weekly parking ticket. Individual prices are €1.50 per person from 8am to 10pm and €3 per person from 10pm to 8am. |
